to·tal·i·tar·i·an (tō-tāl'ĭ-târ'ē-ən) Pronunciation Key
adj. Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: "A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul" (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.)
Ornell, who had a pen name of ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR, was born in India and died in London in the year 1950.He achieved fame during the late 1940s for the satires he wrote which attacked totalitarianism. He became an important voice in his time. His books, novels and documentaries, reflected his worries, views and outlooks towards what he experienced and viewed in the government. All his important goals and actions were expressed in his writing. His parents were a part of the Indian civil service in India. Orwell also joined and later expressed his experience in this service through his novel, Burmese Days (1934). His first book was an outlook on the many years he lived in poverty after leaving berma. His most impressive piece of work which he also wrote during the 30's were two documentaries, which received much attention for their detailed, objective study. Which also related to his life, as he was a solider in the Spanish civil war. He was wounded in this war and eventually was forced to flee for his life. The most popular book written by George Orwell reflect his profound distrust for the government, called ninteen eighty four. Which described Big Brother's rule, (an analogy of the government). Through this book he described his fears about what the future might become and another book attacking stalinism. These books made him famous and a known writer still today. His life, lifestyle and experiences, sparked his sensational books and documentaries which gained him a great amount of success. Everything he experienced was put into some form of writing. If Orwell, had grown up during our generation, or even our parents generation, he probably would have never been able to become the man he became. If he were someone growing up today, he would have never fought in a Spanish civil war, or become part of an Indian civil service, or experience the great amount of poverty he did, or even have to run away from Communists in fear of loosing his life. None of these things would have happened. But what I find so fascinating is his, great dislike towards the government, for their lying ways and trying to gain absolute power. Through all these years all the problems this author described have all faded away, we no longer have a Spanish war going on, but we do still have the same problem with the government. The times he lived in were so harsh, and most of us would never really experience something close, but the main problem he wrote about still exists today.
"On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran."
