Wag the Dog

My reaction to this movie, is that 1984 is existing today. We are so oblivious that we are turly proles. I think this because in the movie the government has their own plans and does what ever they consider necessary to do. They don't consider the people's REAL opinion. The people or proles, are just objects. A barrier between the goal. The government in fact is the Party, and the thought police. Before seeing the movie, I knew that the government was corrupt but I didn't think it was to this extent. Yes, this hasn't happened in real life..... OR HAS IT? This movie gave me a a better understanding of how things truly are or can become. The overall concept of 1984 is a reality. I understood, this movie so much and the connection to the book, that I'm speechless.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU... HE REALLY IS.

The end of 1984.

I'm actually happy that Winston didn't die. Even though his new way of life is wrong and is the opposite of what he was fighting for. I guess I'm happy that he is. If I lived in Oceania, I would want to be happy as well, even if it meant living an oblivious lifestyle. I guess it is true what they say, life is what you make it. Reality is also what you make it. The proles are the only hope. But I don't think they'll ever revolt. Winston has a memory of his mother when he is at the cafe, but quickly convinces himself it's not true, then he looks up and sees a poster of big brother, he then feels safe and at home. He has changed so much, from the beginning of the book. He's been through various stages, anger, paranoid, confusion, love, hate, and finally happiness. Which is something he didn't have ever seemed to experience. I think over all the ending to the book was alright. I think that the minute Obrien told Winston in an earlier chapter that he had already been caught a long time ago. It kind of gave the ending away. When Obrien suggested that he "had already been caught". It made it seem as if, he was caught, brain washed and then released. Which is what happened to Winston. Which makes more sense as to why they spend so much time brainwashing the prisoners, because they don't always kill them.
Over all I think that Obrien should have mentioned that after Winston was released because it gave away the ending. I still think it was a good book, although I think it had no point because at the end everything was for nothing. Well almost everything, because at least now Winston has achieved happiness. And at the end of the day, that's what we all want.

1984. part 3.

1. O'Brien is a member of the Thought Police, do you think he can actually read Winston's mind? Did O'Brien actually permeate Winston's dream all those years ago? Explain your answer.
The whole point of this book, in my opinion is that this is all very possible and is partly happening today. It depicts a possible future. However it's almost impossible for mind reading to occur. I think if Obrien was able to read minds, that it would through the book off a bit. Therefor I don't really think Obrien can read minds. I don't think Obrien permeated Winston's dream, I think it was mostly Winston predicting his own end. When Winston had the dream, he thought that it was a good sign. That the place of no darkness, was something good of enlightenment or a happy end, even though he knew he would die. If Obrien was really permeating Winston's dream, then I don't think he would have made it in a way that Winston would think good of it. It would have come out as being more of a warning or threat. Rather than a false hope.

2. O'Brien has made it clear the Party will kill Winston at some point. We know they want folks to understand and believe before they die, but.....if they are not going to release these people back into society, why do they bother with the time and expense of the torture and "rehabilitation"?
I think they care so much, because at the end of the day all a person has is their pride. Letting someone die with the self satisfaction of hating the Party. Is like a small victory for themselves. By torturing and brain washing the prisoners, your taking the most valuable and only thing left, which is their pride. All the self satisfaction of dying for a cause is gone... completely dead.

3. What's in Room 101?
Room 101 is death, it's the end. Weather you die or not, it's the loss of your reason and why you fight.

PARt 2, VIII

At the beginning of the Chapter, Winston is very surprised when, Obrien turns off the telescreen. He didn't think it was possible or a smart thing to do. I think if anything, it puts Obrien under suspicion. What makes him so special? He is like any other Party member right? So why does he have this special type of privilege. Which by the way he acted, sounded like he'd done it before. I think Obriens confidence, gives him away. He does things and doesn't seem to hesitate. Winston, is very surprised, but doesn't think much about it. Sooner or later the Party catches you. That's what they say and that is what they do. Obrien, seems like has done this numerous times before, so why doesn't he get caught or is investigated by the Party and especially under all his mystery why does he have the special privilege of turning off telescreens? These are clues, which Winston seems to ignore. I think desperateness is what makes Winston make such foolish choices. He realizes that without the help of someone powerful, he might not get any where. He desperately needs Obrien's help, so much that he's willing to believe what he says and deny the facts and clues infront of him. Winston wants to believe Obrien is good, because if he weren't there would be no way out.... nothing else to do.

Chapter VII

1. Winston's dream and the realization it brought him about the Party.
2. Winston and Julia again talk about how their capture is inevitable. They also talk about what the Party will do to them when they confess. What hope does Winston hold to? What does he say will exist no matter what the Party does to him?

Winston has a dream about his mother. He says he murdered his mother. However not physically but mentally. He describes how, they constantly lived in hunger, and underground. He feels guilty because he was very hungry and stole a chocolate bar, and ran away. Never to see his mother again. Winston hates the party for, eliminating human feelings. He feels that proles in a way can still feel emotion, making them more human than a party member, who in turn follows strict rules and isn't allowed to feel emotion. Winston is haunted by the memory of his mother, mostly because of all the guilt he feels. He blames the party for everything that happened and how he feels. HE HATES THE PARTY, FOR IN A WAY, messing up something which was important to him, which was his mother. The party's cold cruel ways, make him and other party members almost inhuman, unable to feel pain.

Winston and Julia talk about them getting caught, and how the room they rented, will increase their chances of getting caught. Winston and Julia know that once they get caught, they will end up confessing. The torture will be too much. Winston says to Julia that he hopes she won't betray him and he wasn't referring to her confessing. Winston hopes that overall Julia will still love him. The party can torture all the people if they wanted. But one thing they can't remove is their inner feelings and emotions. They can't take away someones love or hate toward another person. This is why the Party wants to eliminate emotion, it's the only thing that they cannot control. By eliminating emotion, people can't feel, reassuring the party that they still have total control. If people were able to feel emotion, the Party probably wouldn't even be in control. Emotions allow people to help others, such as a child for their parent. But with no emotions children turn in their parents. Winston and Julia are committing a crime by feeling emotion. Nothing the Party can ever do, will make them feel differently about each other or take that love away. Overall Winston holds on to the hope that no matter what happens he will always have the love of Julia.

Chapter VI

My reaction to Winston, is that he is very foolish for trusting Obrien who is a complete stranger. He doesn't know him, on a personal level, and he could be anyone. I think that Winston doesn't really consider his every move and action. He knows that one day;someday, he'll get caught. I think he relies more on his diary than anything. His diary will be prof of everything he knew. By Obrien's, actions and the way he talked to Winston, anyone can assume that Obrien seems like he has experience. He talked to Winston, so sure of himself. He knew everything to say when and where to say it. It makes him look very suspicious, not to mention when Obrien mentioned Syme or like he referred to it someone he can't remember. It makes him look very suspicious, be it that Syme had only disappeared a day ago. Which enforces my opinion that Winston is foolish. He is so excited about finally being able to talk to Obrien and getting his address, that he simply brushes off all these little clues, which may lead someone to think that Obrien isn't being completely truthful. Winston seems very rapped up in the moment. Winston excepts his fate, but doesn't realize that some of his actions might get him killed sooner than anticipated.

part two chapter five.

In chapter 5. Syme disappears, which was something Winston foreshadowed in the beginning of the book. So I'm not surprised. The two minutes hate is here, and parsons kids wrote a new hate song. Relating it to real life, parents even though they hate something or someone never encourage their children to hate or spread hatred. But this is what happens in the book, in a way. I don't think Parsons or his wife, encourage this type of hate, in the children, because they have so little control over them, like most parents. Which goes to show, how much control the party has over every person prole or not. They have more control over the children then the parents do, so all children being wild and out of control works well to the party's control. Parsons kids are just an example of many other kids in Oceania.
I'm not sure, but i think I can picture why Winston hated his ex wife so much. Because before I didn't really understand. Winston, imagines being able to kill Katherine, so he could be with Julia. Which sounded really cold to me at first, because I can't imagine someone wishing another persons death, just so he could be with someone else. I think, that Winston hates Katherine for not being able to be completely intimate with him. He hates that she couldn't or wasn't able to set the party aside for just one minute. He hates her ignorance and that she was such a loyal follower. Which she showed him, after splitting up with him, when they couldn't have children. Julia on the other hand is a fighter, but for the wrong reasons. It's like a person who helps police find a thief but only because they want the reward money. That's the best way I can describe Julia. Winston finally yells at her because she is a rebel for all the wrong reasons. SHE DOES NOT value her life and instead puts having a good time in front. I think this is a bit frustrating for Winston, since he sees how shes putting her life in danger but at the end most of what she did wouldn't have mad a difference. Katerine and Julia are completely opposite. But at the end, it doesn't matter, because Winston doesn't love either one. Like Juila rebells for the wrong reasons, Winston also "loves" Julia for the wrong reasons.

Political Act.

Winston refers to what he and Julia did as being a political act. What is meant by that? Explain your analysis.

"But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow against the Party. It was a political act."

I think that the author refers to Julia and Winston have relations as a political act. The author says this is a political act, because what they did was such a huge blow to the party. Winston told Julia that the more people she's been with the more he loves her, but this is only because she's going against the party by doing this. By them being together, they are completely going against the party, and it symbolizes the start of a new turning point in the book. The begging of the book is mostly an introduction into the characters and Winston's life. The end of this chapter, symbolizes a possible movement, or change that will occur, because of Julia and Winston, having relations. These two characters are very important and powerful in the story. Them getting together symbolizes, two strong forces, leading rebellion, which can lead to either a huge movement or D-E-AT-H. This is why what Winston and Julia did is referred to a political act, they are indirectly going politically against the party, even though they themselves are a part of it.

1984. END OF PART 1.

END OF PART ONE FINALLY! =]
My feelings towards the end of part one is wow. I've always known that our government of today is corrupt but so far reading the book and comparing it to our life's there is so much more to the whole situation than I had imagined. Its amazing to me how George Orwell had wrote this book as a prediction of the future and that almost everything he discusses actually is happening today. After reading part one I'm feeling kind of aggravated and angry. From outside looking in everything seems to obvious and sometimes I have a hard time trying to figure out why these people don't try to do anything about it. Or why the proles don't take a stand. However everything changes if your one of the characters or people experiencing this either in the book or in modern day life. We middle class normal people are proles, like in the book just as they are unaware and oblivious we are too. We never pay attention to this fact because over everything, we do think we are informed and educated. But we really are not. The proles in the book don't take action because sadly they do not no what the problem is in the first place. ANOTHER thing that I feel after reading part one is a bit bored, because the mood throughout the whole first part is basically the same. The whole first part, to me seems focused on the same things over and over again, there doesn't seem to be a big twist or something to my full interest. I know some people might disagree, and I could be completely wrong. But this is just my opinion.
However, I do give credit to the book, because of this book I view life and society in a different way. Summing up what I have learned... it's bascially just, not to always trust or fully believe what others say. Whether its your parent or a stranger. ALSO.... Their is more to the truth that meets the eye!!!! SOMETHING HUGE, that i have learned about this book SO FAR. This book has inspired me, to behave less like a prole and more like a citizen. To be honest I'm not sure what or how the book will unfold considering we haven't gotten to the climax yet and pretty much anything can happen. However, my prediction about the end of the book is that I think that Winston will probably die. The leader of the rebells always die. Even if Winston is able to convince other people to fight for a cause he will die anyway because he started the movement and committed the crime of thought. The party will attack him because he will become the force of the group. However, I am unsure if he will even be able to open up other peoples eyes, or create a movement. Considering he was willing to kill himself just over speculation that he had been caught.

ARE YOU A PROLE? (1984)

In fact, I do think that we are proles. We are in a way ignorant, young and careless! Sometimes we don't even care for anything of importance. We're slobs, and most of the times won't do anything without someone being in our face about it. We don't do our homework unless remind or forced. We don't clean our rooms unless we're yelled at. We don't listen to what people tell us, until we MAKE THE MISTAKE ourselves. We don't tell the truth until we're caught in a lie. We don't do anything.
WE CLOSE OUR EYES IN THE FACE OF FEAR.
WE CLOSE OUR EYES BECAUSE WE ARE IGNORANT AND SCARED.
Very much like the proles in the book. We are proles. We don't really care for things in our life, like decision making, school etc... so why would we care for things that we can't see. If you close your eyes against truth then your walking with your eyes closed. If you are IGNORANT, you don't see. In the book they mention how many proles don't even understand or see how, the government is taking over, or abusing their rights. Much like us . We don't ask questions when we need to. We question stupid things like
why are you wearing that?
why did you break up with me?
why is she wearing my outfit?
why does he hate me?
why did you leave me?
MY QUESTION IS..
WHY DO YOU CARE?
WHY ARE YOU SO IGNORANT?
The proles in the book do the same thing we do... they spend all their lives working and arguing about stupid stuff.PROLES OR "WE" just want to live average lives, always relying on others to do things for you. The only outcome of this is abuse, when you let someone else do things for you they end up taking advantage which is what the government did to the people in the book and something that is happening today. We have no power over political decision making ALTHOUGH WE THINK WE DO. We always except things as meant to be. We always consider ourselves inferior, and don't think about more important things because everyone just assumes they can't do it. That they won't be able to or that it's not possible.. so in return no one tries or gives a dam. People just accept their situations and try to move on. What we say in return is simply "HEY, THAT'S LIFE!" Not realizing that it could be so much more.

1984

I do think in a way that what Syme was talking about is and isn’t true. I think we are half way there. If you think about it briefly we have a huge vocabulary. The English language has many words, many of them most of us don’t know, haven’t heard of, or don’t know what they mean. There are tons of synonyms for different words, and a million ways to describe one word. However what Syme was expressing is becoming true. In the language Syme wants to make there are very few words. He’s not making a new language just making it shorter. Our language is basically the same. Even though we have so many words, we don’t use them, so its like they aren’t there. I mean if you don’t use them, then why are they important? Its like they don’t exist. The best example I can think of, would be a person, even though you are around, if you don’t have a birth certificate its like you don’t exist so even if you’re there, its really like your not. The same thing is happening with us. People talk on aim, msn, yahoo etc… we use abbreviations to talk. However technology is a huge part of our lives. Almost every home as a computer, a television and a phone or cell phone. Almost all the people we know have used the internet before or talked online. Since it’s so popular it becomes part of our lives, and now its progressing into the way we talk and write. At work, at school and at home.

Author George Orwell

Assignment: Research author George Orwell. How did the times in which he lived influence the stories he wrote?

George Ornell
1903-1950
to·tal·i·tar·i·an (tō-tāl'ĭ-târ'ē-ən) Pronunciation Key
adj. Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: "A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul" (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.)

Ornell, who had a pen name of ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR, was born in India and died in London in the year 1950.He achieved fame during the late 1940s for the satires he wrote which attacked totalitarianism. He became an important voice in his time. His books, novels and documentaries, reflected his worries, views and outlooks towards what he experienced and viewed in the government. All his important goals and actions were expressed in his writing. His parents were a part of the Indian civil service in India. Orwell also joined and later expressed his experience in this service through his novel, Burmese Days (1934). His first book was an outlook on the many years he lived in poverty after leaving berma. His most impressive piece of work which he also wrote during the 30's were two documentaries, which received much attention for their detailed, objective study. Which also related to his life, as he was a solider in the Spanish civil war. He was wounded in this war and eventually was forced to flee for his life. The most popular book written by George Orwell reflect his profound distrust for the government, called ninteen eighty four. Which described Big Brother's rule, (an analogy of the government). Through this book he described his fears about what the future might become and another book attacking stalinism. These books made him famous and a known writer still today. His life, lifestyle and experiences, sparked his sensational books and documentaries which gained him a great amount of success. Everything he experienced was put into some form of writing. If Orwell, had grown up during our generation, or even our parents generation, he probably would have never been able to become the man he became. If he were someone growing up today, he would have never fought in a Spanish civil war, or become part of an Indian civil service, or experience the great amount of poverty he did, or even have to run away from Communists in fear of loosing his life. None of these things would have happened. But what I find so fascinating is his, great dislike towards the government, for their lying ways and trying to gain absolute power. Through all these years all the problems this author described have all faded away, we no longer have a Spanish war going on, but we do still have the same problem with the government. The times he lived in were so harsh, and most of us would never really experience something close, but the main problem he wrote about still exists today.

"On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran."

BIG BROTHER TV SHOW........ A REALITY???

Assignment: The Big Brother concept? Could this happen in society? Is it already?

I do think in a way that this is already happening in our society. In the big brother TV show the people are constantly watched and nothing really gets past the camera lenses. Your every move is filmed and there is no such thing as privacy. This does and doesn't happen in our society. I do believe that we have privacy, in our home, to a certain degree, because our phone conversations can be heard by the government and by strangers. We don't even know when this is happening. However when we are in the public we are constantly watched, there is no privacy what so ever. First of all we are always watched by others, most of the time strangers. We are constantly viewed by the public eye, when we step out of our house. Also, today's technology has advanced tremendously. There are cameras every where. On the highways, corners, malls, stores, supermarkets!! Every where. We are always watched, when outside of our home. In the future, I do think its possible that we soon won't even have the privacy of our own home. The government is the head of our society and I do think that they virtually control everything. The government can slowly manipulate us, into thinking this is the best. Today some security systems have this feature, complete strangers can be watching us for our "safety" so they say. Even in some of our cars we are being watched. GMC cars have an on star feature, were they can find us anywhere and identify us. SO we are being watched every were we go. Sometimes our home isn't out of limits. For now I can say most people do have privacy in their homes, but that's "for now" the future has no limits.

The Biggest Lies in History.

ITS STUPID HOW PEOPLE NEVER QUESTION WHO THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO QUESTION BUT RATHER QUESTION THOSE WHO QUESTION.

1. SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 ???????????? --> THE Hugest CONSPIRACY COMMITTED BY MAN KIND!! (MY OPINION)

2. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SELLING INDULGENCES, IN A GUARANTEED PROMISE TO HEAVEN.

3. Richard Nixon and the water gate.

4. Iraq War. ????

5. Stalin's promise of equality

When my teacher first assigned this assignment,to us. My plan was to talk about the catholic church selling indulgences. However when I went to Google.com and typed in "the biggest lie in history" the first link that came up on that page was something about 9.11. I still didn't consider writing about 9/11 but visited the site out of curiosity and their I discovered several links and videos which gave me so many details on 9.11. The information is so alarming, so much that it's quite hard to look away. If you look under at my sources you can visit the site. I have so much to say about this subject but as soon as I watched this video, all my questions were answered and this video called "lose change" covered everything I want to say. SO PLEASE WATCH IT AND GO EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT SEPTEMBER 11. It is easy to close your eyes and say that whatever the government says is right but unfortunately this isn't true!
The reason I think that the September 11, attacks were planned by the government is because, their is way to much coincidences occurring. The day before the attacks Condoleezza rice made a call to a very important politician advising, that he not fly any planes tomorrow. So many important people worked in the twin towers yet most of them didn't even get hurt. Politicians and government officials canceled all their plans for the next day.(SPET.11). COINCIDENCE?? I THINK NOT!! Also when you zoom into the 9.11 tapes you can actually see small bombs going off on floors way far down, from were the plane hit. Many witnesses and people in the building describe hearing bomb like noises. Some people even have burn marks to prove this. Many firefighters claim that they could grantee their were bombs in the buildings. Yet still, no one is willing to listen. Just ask yourself, WHY ARE THEIR SO MANY MYSTERIES SURROUNDING THIS 9.11 ATTACK. IF THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOTHING TO HIDE.. THEN WHY ARE THEY???????? There are also many other questions surrounding the twin towers attack. But lets move on and ask.... a plane hit the pentagon right ????
You can believe that if you want to, but you'd be wrong anyway. There is no video that shows a plane hitting the pentagon. The government won't release it. WHY???????
Why won't they release the video, what's wrong in doing so. We were told that a plane hit the pentagon? But do we really know if this is true? Many witnesses at the site, describe a bomb like figure going into the pentagon. They have also found recordings of vice president Chaney, giving command to let the plane come, after reports came that their was a suspicious plane flying around the pentagon. There are to many questions and no answers. After watching the video, which provides more information and evidence, I think you will have a better idea of who is telling the truth. But at the end you make the decision. Only dumb people blindly believe what people of higher authority have to say.
( ALL THIS INFORMATION IS CREDIBLE, BECAUSE I HAVE RESEARCHED IT, AND YOUR PROBABLY WONDERING WHY YOU HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT THIS, ITS BECAUSE FEW PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS, AND SO THIS INFORMATION GAINS NO POPULARITY, AND MOST PEOPLE AREN'T WILLING TO RECOGNIZE THIS AS TRUTH, AND LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE THEY SIMPLY BRUSH IT OFF.) SAD TRUTH. =/

IS THIS OUR FUTURE ??

In your opinion, is something like this possible in our society? Could information be so controlled by the government to the point where people do not even know the difference? Explain why you think so.

RESPONSE:

Yes. I do think this is possible because the government is the center of our society it represents civilization. It is the fundamental part of our society. If our government was attacked the core of our society would be broken. The POWER of the government is so great that we couldn't survive without it, we as a society and civilization would be absolutely nothing. We need the government to survive. This is from the view of a person.
Now imagine you as a government official with so much power and wealth. Sometimes its natural for people to become a bit greedy. But there is always a boundary line. The amount of power and money at stake can really change someone. All the information we receive from the outside world is controlled by our government. We watch the news today and believe everything we see, but these people could just lie about the information and you would probably never know. The government has the power to brainwash us, they can tell us lies about other country's and we would easily believe it, and now all of a sudden we would be hating a country for doing absolutely nothing. The same works with the people. They can manipulate us into thinking what they want us to think. So much is their power, we give to these people who in reality are strangers, that we stop thinking for ourselves because we assume that the government has already got us covered. But the more we keep thinking this the more vulnerable we are. And to the government... we are just their puppets. We are just their road block in the path of money and power!

Our Government of Today.. Our future Killers of Tommorow

Assignment.

How would it be possible for a government to keep the truth from its citizens?- For what reasons would a government want to control or manipulate information?

The government could keep information from its citizens. It is very easy if you think about it. Its called M-O-N-E-Y!!! Even though we would like to think that everyone is honest and generally a good person reality is another. If you are a very important person, or influential money wise, sad truth is that you can almost always get anything you want. Politicians know many people and can easily find others that are willing to keep a dirty secret or help create a conspiracy for money. You would be surprised what some people are willing to do for money. These people are paid a lot of money and sometimes keeping a secret doesn’t seem like much, but if you spill the secret, the end result is death. So even if you wanted to come out with the truth, are you willing to die for it?
I think that the government would want to keep information hidden from people because if people were aware of the truth then they would probably over through the government or mess up any plans that the government was thinking about doing. When the people don’t know, they are given a false sense of safety and the government is happy because they don’t have to deal with the peoples opinions. The government then abuses their power, given to them by the “clueless” people. If the government can control the information then they can increase their money and power. Then no one will judge them or ever risk losing power, because after all the people represent power. Without us there is no power for the government. We represent a great risk for government officials. To them we are better left unaware of our current situation. If we were aware of what was really going on then I’m pretty sure our government wouldn’t be corrupt. Our biggest mistake is blindly trusting others, and never second guessing or questioning them. Smart people ask questions, I guess we just haven’t got the message yet. =/
